the first 10 days
jambo together!
we were quite at the end of world, but now a bit closer in malindi we can tell about the last 10 days:
We luckily started our journey with emirates air by being upgraded into businessclass, because of overbooking...too bad it was only 7 hours flight...champain! we arrived in nairobi wednesday, and after a too expensive taxi trip at our friends friends place around 7. very nice place, very nice people but very bad food...so everybody was foodpoisoned (exept from marguerite!)! welcome to kenia! one night on toilet and one day in bed and everything was alright....
on friday night we left nairobi with some friends of friends(anabelle, sam and catherine) to go to tiwibeach, in the south of mombasa, to spent the weekend in a lodge at the beach!
it was the paradise! there was nearly no one, exept palm trees endless beach, clearblue water and corals, we had a cook, and the fisherman were bringing fresh fish and crabs....
sunday evening we went back to mombasa and separated from the others, who needed to go back to their work...we spent the next day in mombasa, walking around the interesting old city. the life here is so diferent to nairobi, there are a lot people from india, and covered muslim women, because 90% of the people on the coast are muslim. in the morning we could hear the imams shouting their prayings out of the mosques.
tuesday we went on the looong trip to lamu, an island archipel in the north of mombasa, another paradise, everybody was telling us! well we needed like 12 hours to get there, minus 2 hours waiting because the bus crushed down and they had to repair it! the last 4 hours we were shaked through on the bad sandy street, but through a lovely countryside with a lot small tribes...
we had to take a ferry-like boat to get to the lamu paradise, like 80 people on 20 sqm...but it was so beautiful, we were passing islands covered by green mangroves and lovely white untouched beaches!
the city lamu is an old arabic settlement from the 16th century with lovely old houses , small streets and quite relaxed people. the lonely planet says it was a hippy place in the 70th...you could still smell that...
we stayed 4 nights, spent a day at the endless beach, made a dhow trip, (small sailboat ) to another island with fishing and later eating the fish...(i catched 2 and marguerite nothing) well they were quite small, but they brought some fish from the market so that we had something to eat...
on one trip trough the deeper parts of the city, we surprisingly end up in a small girls school, and because we were special guests they were singing for us, and in between laughing all the time about this funny unusual situation...
well, today we went away from lamu sadly. the bus way was even harder than before, i am surprised that my back is still working, and of course that we are alive because they are driving so fast here...
now we are in malindi on the way to watamu, another nice place, were we want to do snorkelling, visit some ruins and a beautiful forest...
more about that next week.
